There are at least 80 FREE VSTi drum machines out there.
One of the best is M-Drummer

Another FREE one is Blue Noise Drums
Probably the the best FREE drum sampler, is a drumplugin very much the same as BFD and EZdrummer.
It has outputs for each drum, overheads and ambience mics so you can add compressors and eq's as you like.
In fact that is the best way to approach this plugin since it is made out of raw 24 bit files throught micpres of a Ludwig drumset.


DSK Plugins have also some drums, not the best but at least free, and with the right effects, you might get quite god results.
